 Spring, 2012
| Summer is upon us and if you’re looking for a great spot to cool off … or get hotter … here are 10 gay beaches you’ll definitely want to check out. |
| |
|
| 10. Little Beach (Maui, HI) |
| |
Don’t let the name fool you! This popular clothing optional spot is about one mile south of the Makena Beach and Golf Resort in south Maui. Walk to the beach, turn right, and hike over the promontory at the end to "Little Beach." The far end is the gayest and the bevy of bronzed guys and gals is definitely worth the trek. |
| |
|
| 9. Oval Beach (Saugatuck, MI) |
| |
Known as the “Provincetown of the Midwest,” Saugatuck is home to Oval Beach, a bastion of the LGBT community. The unspoiled dunes of Lake Michigan's eastern shore and the back dunes area of Oval Beach make this the perfect spot for sunbathing in the nude. |
| |
|
| 8. Wreck Beach (Vancouver, Canada) |
| |
It’s kind of a hike to get to this sandy oasis in VanCity, but well worth it. Nudity is allowed and encouraged at this remote spot of Pacific Spirit Regional Park, which can be accessed from the Wreck Beach Trail Loop. There’s no better place to check out the British Columbia’s natural beauty! |
| |
|
| 7. Elia Beach (Mykonos, Greece) |
| |
Elia epitomizes fabulous gay Greece. You can get there either by car, scooter or quad bike directly from your hotel or by bus from Mykonos town. A boat will bring you back for a cost of 6 euros and about a 40 minute ride. Find yourself a Greek God or Goddess on the sand, then venture to a nearby bar or restaurant for lunch above the shoreline and take in the great view of the bay. |
| |
|
| 6. Hippie Hollow (Austin, TX) |
| |
A well-known nude swimming hole for decades, Hippie Hollow is remote section of the shoreline of Lake Travis. The area became more popular in the 1960s due to the cultural changes of that era and after Woodstock, the nickname ‘Hippie Hollow’ was born. |
| |
|
| 5. Farme Beach (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) |
| |
Popularized by the song “The Girl from Ipanema,” this world-famous beach gives foreign visitors a sense of life in Rio, displaying a cross-section of different lifestyles, chic boutiques and eateries set against luxurious apartment buildings. The gay spot at Ipanema Beach is east of Rua Farme de Amoedo, between Posto 8 and 9. You can´t miss it! There are rainbow flags and Ken look-a-likes everywhere. You don’t have to be in top shape to join the fun. |
| |
|
| 4. Haulover Beach (Miami, FL) |
| |
This legendary haven is mostly a hangout for men, but you will also find lesbians and straight revelers camping out too. Rent a chair or umbrella from Boucher Brothers or lay a towel in the sand like the locals do. You’re sure to love the view of the shoreline and the tan, fit hotties that frequent it. No trip to Miami would be complete without checking out this sun-kissed paradise! |
| |
|
| 3. Black’s Beach (San Diego, CA) |
| |
It’s a workout to have to hike down the mountain to get there, but definitely worth it. Black’s Beach is not only San Diego’s only clothing optional beach but one of the most beautiful sections of the SoCal coastline. It is hit or miss with the hot bods, like most clothing optional beaches, but there is a fun vibe and you can get away with drinking here. |
| |
|
| 2. Fire Island (Fire Island, NY) |
| |
You can’t leave Fire Island without enjoying the beach. After basking in the sun, dive into the Atlantic Ocean. Fire Island is separated from Long Island by a series of interconnected bays and automobiles are only permitted on the east and west ends. You can get anywhere you need to go by boat, sea plane or ferry (either Bay Shore or Sayville). While hundreds of thousands of tourists frequent this quaint haven in the summer, Fire Island has a permanent population of just about 500 people, so there’s plenty of natural beauty to behold beyond the Chelsea boys. |
| |
|
| 1. North Bondi Beach (Sydney, Australia) |
| |
If it’s a sunny summer day, you’ll find a plethora of hot men and women basking, strolling and cruising at North Bondi Beach. This is the only beach front that faces the south of Sydney, so you’ll avoid the breeze and wind. The North Bondi Surf Lifesaving Club has some of the sexiest lifeguards in the world. If you like blonde, bronzed boys in speedos, aussieBums or board shorts, you won’t be |
