Navigating Monogamy

Behind that simple question is usually something much bigger."Are we going to fit in?"

In a high stakes environment

One of the many questions that pass my way aren’t always about the events or what a cabin is like.

It’s usually a quiet ask that comes after a booking, likely, like many of us, from an anxious newbie.

“What if we’re monogamous?”

Behind that simple question is usually something much bigger.

“Are we going to fit in?”

It’s an understandable concern.

Campit is home to thousands of guests every season. Some are single. Some are married. Some are in open relationships. Some are dating. Some are figuring themselves out after a divorce. Others have been together for forty years and couldn’t imagine life without each other.

The truth is, there isn’t one “Campit relationship.” There are thousands of them, and that’s kind of the point.

The biggest misconception

I’ve heard people assume that because Campit is an LGBTQ+ resort, everyone is looking for the same thing. Everyone is looking for a hookup, or a night out on the trails.

But the truth is, they aren’t. Just like any neighborhood, every campsite tells a different story. Some couples spend the entire weekend holding hands by the pool being inseparable. Some spend the afternoon playing cards outside their camper in total solitude. Some go to every party, some don’t. Some are open. Some are monogamous. Some are somewhere in between.

None of those relationships define the campground, and none of those have to define you or your relationship. They simply exist alongside one another.

Your relationship belongs to you

One of the things I appreciate most about Campit is that nobody hands you a rulebook for how you’re supposed to exist here.

You don’t have to explain your relationship. You don’t have to defend it. You don’t have to participate in anything that doesn’t align with your values or well, your rules.

If your perfect weekend is sitting around a campfire with your husband of twenty years, that’s every bit as much a Campit experience as dancing until midnight with a stranger. If your idea of a vacation is sleeping in, floating in the pool, grabbing a burger, and calling it a night, nobody is going to tell you you’re doing it wrong.

The conversations that matter

I do think Campit asks something of couples, not because of what happens here, but because vacations have a way of shining a light on conversations we may have avoided at home.

Boundaries. Expectations. Trust. Communication.

Those conversations aren’t unique to Campit. They’re part of any healthy relationship. The couples who seem to enjoy themselves the most aren’t necessarily the ones with the same relationship style. They’re the ones who know each other well enough to say, “Here’s what we’re comfortable with,” and trust each other to honor it.

At the end of the day…

Society can test your relationship, but Campit wont..

It’s just a place. The people in it are a melting pot.

The people you meet may look different than the ones in your hometown. Their lives may be different. Their relationships may be different.

But your relationship doesn’t stop being yours because someone else’s looks different.

After all these years, I’ve watched monogamous couples celebrate anniversaries here, open couples celebrate anniversaries here, and people find love for the very first time here. Hell, even get married here.

The common thread has never been how they love. It’s that they found a place where they felt comfortable enough to be themselves.

And I think that’s something all of us can understand.
