The People You’ll Never Forget

I'll never forget the couple who danced.

One of the unexpected perks of working at Campit is getting to meet thousands of people.

Every season brings new faces and every day brings a new story, and I sorta love that about this place.

Some stay one or two nights. Others stay all summer.

Some I’ve known for years. Others I only crossed paths with for a few minutes yet somehow we know names.

Sometimes though, faces can start to blend together. But every once in a while…someone leaves a mark.

I’ll never forget one of my favorite, simple guys.

Every morning, before most of us had even poured our first cup of coffee, he’d already be sitting outside with his newspaper. Not waving. Not talking. Just living his best life. He probably doesn’t even know who I am but I’ve appreciated his quiet nature for years.

It’s funny how that quietness can feel like kindness.

I’ll never forget the couple who danced.

Labor Day Weekend. Sure, they were sexy of course. Dressed in a harness and not much else. But that wasn’t the first thing I noticed.

I saw two guys who were clearly madly in love. Dancing in the middle of Westwood like no one was watching. Holding each other, little pecks here and there.

I doubt they remember it but for me, it was a little glimpse of something I hadn’t seen in a while.

I’ll never forget the food they made me.

One moment I am passing by and waving at the cutest couple, and next thing you know I am sitting with them having a home cooked meal made by a fire.

They have no idea how bad I needed that connection and 7 years later, they still feed me by the fire.

I’ll never forget the older couple who still looked at each other like they had just met.

I had to learn their story. I wanted to know how it lasted, what’s their secret. Although we no longer talk as often as I would like, to this day I think about them two and the sheer happiness they conveyed.

We will never forget our first camp crush.

Our first time walking the trails.

Our first time sitting at the pool with less clothing than we anticipated.

Or our first goodbye.

People often think that best part of Campit are the pool or the shows but frankly after all these years I have to disagree….

I think it’s the people.

They’re the reason so many of us keep coming back.

Because long after the gates are closed and there’s snow on the ground it’s rarely the events we remember.

It’s the people.

And maybe that’s the greatest compliment a place can receive.
